HeroClear - Fund validation service (FVS)

This article explains how HeroClear uses the ATO's Fund Validation Service (FVS) to route super contributions accurately, and what to do if you encounter a fund lookup error or a fund merger.

This article explains how to:

What is the Fund Validation Service?

The Fund Validation Service (FVS) is the ATO-hosted register of registered super funds, containing their ABNs, USIs, BSBs, and bank account details. HeroClear queries FVS automatically during fund setup and at batch creation to make sure contributions are routed to the correct account.

From 1 July 2026, FVS also surfaces upcoming changes to large-fund details — such as mergers, USI changes, or BSB/account changes — so HeroClear can update fund records before contributions are misrouted.

Good to know

You do not need to query FVS manually — HeroClear handles this automatically.

When does HeroClear call FVS?

HeroClear queries FVS at three points:

  1. When a fund is added or selected during HeroClear setup
  2. At batch creation, as a safety check that the fund's bank details haven't changed since the last batch
  3. When a fund publishes an upcoming change, HeroClear refreshes the cached fund record automatically

Troubleshooting FVS errors

"FVS fund lookup failed for fund identifiers: ABN" error — what does this mean?

This means HeroClear queried FVS for the given fund ABN and didn't get a clean response. Common causes are:

  • The fund ABN is wrong — for example, if the fund has changed its name or product (e.g. AMP Super → SignatureSuper) the ABN may have changed
  • FVS returned an error or timed out — a temporary service issue
  • The fund has merged and the old ABN is no longer valid

What to do: Confirm the correct fund ABN and USI against the ATO's Super Fund Lookup, correct the fund details on the employee record, and re-trigger the batch. If the fund ABN is correct and FVS still fails, contact Employment Hero support with the batch ID and fund ABN.

Super fund mergers

A super fund is merging — what do I need to do?

When FVS shows an upcoming merger, HeroClear will reflect the change in its fund cache on the effective date automatically. As an employer, you should:

  1. Make sure contributions before the effective date use the transferring fund's USI
  2. Contributions on and after the effective date use the receiving fund's USI

HeroClear handles this automatically once FVS surfaces the change. If you have questions about a specific merger, confirm the details against Super Fund Lookup and ensure contributions are routed to the receiving fund's USI from the effective date.
