Starting from the first full pay period on or after 1 June 2026, the Fair Work Commission will implement significant changes to the treatment of “sleepovers” under the SCHADS Award.
The key change is that when an employee is rostered to work immediately before and after a sleepover period, the work performed before the sleepover and the work performed after the sleepover must be treated separately when determining applicable shift penalty. As a result, different shift penalty may apply to each portion of the shift.
This article provides a comprehensive overview of the changes to Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award's sleepover handling following the recent FWO update.
If you have any customised rules within the award, it is important to note:
- Customised rules will not automatically update when you apply award updates to your platform.

Scenario 1: With pre and post sleepover and ordinary, afternoon, night, and weekend shift
Expected Result:
Pre sleepover shifts
Ordinary hours will be paid by default, unless:
- The shift occurs between 8:00 PM and 12:00 AM - will be treated and paid as an afternoon shift for the entire shift.
- The shift occurs between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM - will be treated and paid as a night shift for the entire shift.
Post sleepover shifts
Ordinary hours will apply unless the shift occurs between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM, in which case the entire shift will be classified and paid as a night shift.
Scenario 2: Shifts with work during sleep over
Expected Result:
Shifts will receive appropriate pay, and work during sleep over will be paid overtime rates.
Scenario 3: Broken Shift and Pre/Post Sleepover
Expected Result:
Shifts will receive appropriate shift loading and broken shift allowance

Expected Result:
Shifts will receive appropriate pay and overtime rate.

- A post-sleepover shift followed by a subsequent pre- and post-sleepover shift with less than a 10-hour gap, please ensure that the "not a broken shift" shift condition is applied to both the pre- and post-sleepover periods where they are not intended to be paid as a broken shift.
- Note: If you are using a T&A system that does not support shift conditions, you will need to manually remove any broken shift allowances triggered in this instance.

25.1(c) Maximum 8 hour limit before and after sleepover: The system will not automatically trigger overtime at the 8-hour mark for pre or post sleepover shifts. Example: If an employee is under a 10-hour agreement and works 9 hours pre-sleepover plus 4 hours post-sleepover, overtime triggers only after 10 total ordinary hours are completed.
If you need to enforce an 8-hour maximum limit to pre or post sleepover shifts in these scenarios, a custom configuration will be required.
